Some of the most biodiverse places on Earth, full of amazing species, colors, and forms, are also among the most threatened. These areas, known as Biodiversity Hotspots, are home to many plants and animals at risk of extinction. But scientists and conservationists see them as opportunities to protect much of the world’s biodiversity.
For decades, UTEP professors and students have collected plants, snakes, frogs, and more from three of these hotspots—one close to home in the Madrean Pine-Oak Woodlands, and others in Africa and Australia. This exhibit blends scientific collections with the artistic vision of UTEP graphic design students. By combining collections, design, and conservation stories, we invite audiences to reimagine these hotspots as places of hope for a shared future.

These presentations are part of a series of talks and workshops associated with our current exhibit "Cultivating Your Home: Embracing Chihuahuan Desert Diversity." This lecture series looks at the natural history of the Chihuahuan Desert and how native plant gardens reflect, support, and preserve its ecological story.
