Projects 2025

Earth Summit 2025 (Amount $5,904) (3/28/25)
SACNAS Paso del Norte student chapter, AWG Sun City, and Environmental Advocates SEEDS have collaborated to organize the 2024 Earth Summit. Objectives include, 1) to continue the celebration of Earth Month and unite students behind this year's theme of "Planet Vs Plastic", and 2) to raise awareness of environmental issues and provide opportunities for students to engage with UTEP and community organizations.

Memorial Gym Energy Efficiency & Sustainability Retrofit (Amount $106,515) 12/8/2025
Memorial Gym (MG) is one of UTEP’s most historic and heavily used buildings, supporting academic programs, intramural activities, athletic training, youth camps, and professional development programs under Professional and Public Programs (P3). However, much of its infrastructure—lighting, ventilation, and energy management systems—predates current sustainability standards, resulting in higher energy consumption and reduced occupant comfort. This project aims to retrofit MG’s core systems to improve energy efficiency and serve as a live educational model for sustainable facility management. Specifically, the proposal includes replacing high-wattage fluorescent fixtures with LED lighting, adding occupancy sensors, optimizing HVAC scheduling and controls, and implementing a digital energy dashboard that displays real-time usage and savings data for educational outreach. Additionally, the project will promote water conservation by upgrading restroom aerators and encouraging behavioral changes through signage. The initiative aligns directly with UTEP’s sustainability goals and the Green Fund’s mission by reducing operational costs, lowering the carbon footprint, and fostering environmental awareness across campus. The long-term plan is to use MG as a replicable model for similar retrofits in other legacy facilities, supporting UTEP’s transition toward a greener, more resilient campus.
